Wedding planning to stay debt free

I believe weddings should not place a couple into debt. As I plan my wedding, I understand why they cost an average of thirty thousand dollars. Weddings are a time to celebrate the start of a new family. I believe there is a way to plan a decent wedding that does not cost an extraordinary amount. I intend to find this way to be happy with the cost and the overall appearance.
Why is there pressure to focus on the materialistic view of a wedding?  I think media is a big reason for that. Shows such as Say Yes to the Dress and Four Weddings set the standard for what weddings need to look like. I want simple things at my wedding that will make everyone feel comfortable.  I don’t plan on spending money on open bars, expensive dresses, or fancy venues because I don’t think that what will matter in thirty years. It may sound cheap, but I don’t think spending money like that is worth it. I want a wedding that I will be able to look back and know that I planned it right.
As I plan, I want the focus to be on the celebration of joining two families rather than focusing on what my dress looks like or the cost of the venue. In the end, the most memorable and important thing is that a new phase in life is starting. I know I will find a way to make the day affordable and comfortable, without seeming cheap.
