Learning From AMST 100

One of the biggest things I have learned in American Studies 100 is how to write a descriptive paragraph with few words. This class has also shown me to look at the world differently. It has also taught me how to express my opinion through words and through visuals. The assignment where we stated our beliefs forced me to think about what I believe, and how to show it rather than tell. The digital story assignment pushed me to show a story with a point. Each assignment gave me a new opportunity to improve my writing skills.

The Longest Eight Hours

Friday, November 25th 2011 is a day I can remember so vividly, I am haunted by it. It was the longest eight hours I had endured.  My friend and I had just gotten Sundaes when she received a call. “Dale was in an accident and is heading for Shock Trauma. Jeff might have been in the car” She said as she hung up the phone. Immediately I call my fiancĂ© to tell him his friends were on their way to shock trauma. The day I had always feared had arrived.

On the way to the hospital we call Jeff’s parents to inform them of what happened. As we arrive at the hospital we search for answers but do not find any because we are not family. We waited until their families had arrived. The doctors came to deliver the news. Jeff is gone and dale may not walk.  I watched as Jeff’s mom heard the news.  Not twenty minutes later we learn of another friend who was in the car did not make it. I watched as his mother collapsed in the hall. The hardest thing to witness is a mother learn her child is gone.

I sat in shock listening to my fiancĂ© say over and over that he was suppose to be in the car, and he might of changed the outcome. Guilt is the only feeling I had. I knew my friend had caused this, and he is still alive. Dale was the only one in the car who wore his seatbelt. Although he wasn't okay, he is still alive. It’s been two years, and the idea that troubles me the most is they might have lived if they wore their seatbelt.

A Thurley-Good Place To Be.

There is nothing like watching the planes land at BWI Thurgood Marshall while you take a break from biking. The Dixon Aircraft Observation Area is a place where bikers can rest, children can play, and people can watch airplanes glide to the runway. I found people utilizing every part of this space as long as its open. Families bring their children to play and watch the planes and bikers park their cars to get ready to ride. The parking lot is overflowing with cars which suggest the space could be bigger to allow more people to use this area.

Wedding planning to stay debt free

I believe weddings should not place a couple into debt. As I plan my wedding, I understand why they cost an average of thirty thousand dollars. Weddings are a time to celebrate the start of a new family. I believe there is a way to plan a decent wedding that does not cost an extraordinary amount. I intend to find this way to be happy with the cost and the overall appearance.
Why is there pressure to focus on the materialistic view of a wedding?  I think media is a big reason for that. Shows such as Say Yes to the Dress and Four Weddings set the standard for what weddings need to look like. I want simple things at my wedding that will make everyone feel comfortable.  I don’t plan on spending money on open bars, expensive dresses, or fancy venues because I don’t think that what will matter in thirty years. It may sound cheap, but I don’t think spending money like that is worth it. I want a wedding that I will be able to look back and know that I planned it right.
As I plan, I want the focus to be on the celebration of joining two families rather than focusing on what my dress looks like or the cost of the venue. In the end, the most memorable and important thing is that a new phase in life is starting. I know I will find a way to make the day affordable and comfortable, without seeming cheap.

The Streaming Life

What is it about watching movies or TV series on Netflix?  They’re the next best thing. Netflix gave consumers the opportunity to rent or stream as many movies as they want for a flat rate, with no due date. They've become the library of entertainment. I love Netflix; I’m able to watch five years of a series in just five days. Streaming shows and movies online is how I watch TV every day.  Why own all these movies or shows when Netflix gives you access to thousands of movies for less than the price of one each month?

Home. Just Down the Runway

I feel most at home when I can hear the distant roars of airplane engines at Baltimore Washington International; now known as Thurgood Marshall Airport. I've spent the majority of my life never more than 5 miles away from this airport which is a bit ironic; I have the perfect opportunity to travel. It took me a while to appreciate how lucky I am to live so close. When I do fly it’s nice to know when I land, I really am home.
